The Triconex 3504E is a high-density digital input module engineered for the most demanding safety-critical applications. As part of the Triconex Safety Instrumented System (SIS) portfolio, it provides the foundation for reliable and fault-tolerant signal acquisition.

The module features Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) architecture, where each input channel is processed through three independent circuits. This design ensures that a single component failure will not prevent a valid safety demand or cause a spurious trip. The module continuously performs "stuck-on" and "stuck-off" self-tests on all input points, completing these tests in less than half a second to guarantee the ability to detect critical state transitions. The 64 input points are grouped in sets of eight, which simplifies wiring and isolates diagnostic groups.

Users can configure the module for either 24 VDC or 48 VDC nominal input voltages via TriStation software, with a wide operational range of 20 to 72 VDC. The DC-coupled design ensures faithful reproduction of field contact status changes without the distortion introduced by AC coupling. Programmable hysteresis (4 VDC for 24V, 7 VDC for 48V) provides excellent noise immunity, preventing false triggering from electrical noise on field wiring. The input circuitry incorporates 1500Vrms optical isolation between the channel and the backplane, ensuring system protection.

Front-panel LED indicators provide per-point input status and module status (PASS, FAULT, ACTIVE). The module is hot-swappable in TMR systems, allowing replacement without process interruption. For enhanced reliability, the backplane contacts are gold-plated to support up to 10^8 insertion cycles.

The 3504E is certified to IEC 61508 for use in systems up to SIL 3 and meets ATEX/IECEx Zone 2 and UL Class I Division 2 hazardous location requirements. Its wide operating temperature range of -40°C to +70°C and rugged IP66 enclosure make it suitable for extreme environments such as offshore platforms and refineries.

Key applications include Emergency Shutdown (ESD) systems, Fire & Gas (F&G) detection, Burner Management Systems (BMS), High-Integrity Pressure Protection Systems (HIPPS), and turbomachinery control. The module is compatible with Tricon v9, v10, and v11 chassis and can be paired with Triconex 3008 main processors and 8312 power supplies.
