The Panametrics PanaFlow MV82 is an insertion-style multivariable vortex flow meter engineered for accurate measurement of mass flow, volumetric flow, temperature, pressure, and density in a single compact instrument. Its multivariable design integrates a vortex shedding velocity sensor, a 1000 ohm platinum RTD temperature sensor, and a solid-state pressure transducer, all housed in a single sensor head assembly located downstream of the shedder bar.

By measuring velocity, temperature, and pressure at the same point in the pipeline, the MV82 eliminates the inaccuracies caused by using separate devices installed at different locations. This single-point measurement approach significantly improves process measurement accuracy, particularly in applications where process conditions may vary spatially.

The MV82 is available in several configurations to match specific application requirements:

  • MV82-VTP: Full multivariable version with flow computer functionality, incorporating temperature and pressure sensors for compensated mass flow of gases, liquids, and steam. Provides up to three 4-20 mA outputs for five process measurements including volumetric flow, mass flow, pressure, temperature, and density.
  • MV82-VT: Integrates a precision 1000 ohm platinum RTD for compensated mass flow reading, typically used for saturated steam applications.
  • MV82-V: Direct volumetric flow measurement, the most cost-effective solution for liquid flow monitoring including water and hydrocarbon fuels.
  • MV82-EM: Energy monitoring option enabling real-time calculation of energy consumption for steam, hot water, or chilled water systems. Uses inputs from two temperature sensors to calculate delta T and energy total in selectable units including BTU, joules, calories, watt-hours, megawatt-hours, and horsepower-hours.

Accuracy specifications are ±1.2% for liquid mass flow and ±1.5% for gas and steam mass flow. Volumetric flow accuracy is ±1.5% for liquids and ±2% for gases and steam. Temperature accuracy is ±2°F (±1°C), pressure accuracy is ±0.3% of full scale, and density accuracy ranges from ±0.3% to ±0.5% of reading depending on fluid type.

The standard temperature range is -40°C to 260°C, with a high-temperature option extending to 400°C for demanding applications. Pressure rating is 30 to 1500 psi, and the meter is suitable for pipe sizes from 2 to 72 inches.

The meter features an advanced design with digital signal processing for vibration isolation, ensuring reliable operation even in challenging industrial environments. Installation options include fixed or retractable configurations for hot or cold tapping, with process connections available in compression or packing gland styles with 2" NPT or flanged ANSI 150/300/600 connections.

Communication capabilities include HART and Modbus protocols, enabling seamless integration with DCS and SCADA systems. A local LCD display with six-button keypad provides convenient on-site configuration and monitoring. Power options include 18-36 VDC or optional AC power.

The PanaFlow MV82 is certified for hazardous locations with FM, ATEX, and IECEx approvals for Division 1/Zone 1 explosive atmospheres.

Typical applications include high-temperature and high-velocity steam measurement, power generation, HVAC and district energy management, natural gas allocation, and petrochemical mass balancing.
