Product Description
The Isotech 999 Medusa R is a primary blackbody source specifically designed for calibrating radiation pyrometers and infrared thermometers in standards laboratories requiring the highest levels of measurement accuracy. With a temperature range of 30°C to 550°C, it serves as an optimal radiation source for both comparison calibrations and fixed point realizations.
The instrument is engineered to accommodate ITS-90 blackbody fixed point cells, including indium (156.5985°C), tin (231.928°C), and zinc (419.527°C). When used with these 99.9999% pure metal cells, the Medusa R can achieve accuracies of ±0.05°C, making it suitable for primary standard applications. The 45 mm diameter by 285 mm deep cavity provides excellent thermal uniformity with emissivity greater than 0.995.
The digital temperature controller allows precise setting of cavity temperature with resolution of 0.01°C below 100°C and 0.1°C above. Warm-up time to 550°C is approximately 45 minutes, with similar stabilization time. Temperature variation over a 5-minute period is ±0.2°C as indicated on the controller, with similar variations detected by radiation thermometers viewing the cavity.
Uniformity testing reveals maximum temperature differences of ±1°C across the 48 mm target area for set points between 100°C and 500°C. Along the inner 200 mm of the cavity, maximum differences of ±4°C were measured at 400°C and 500°C using a fiber-optic radiation probe.
The Medusa R includes PC interface and Windows software as standard. It is available with UKAS or NPL traceable calibration certificates for the built-in indicator and supplied probe (935-14-95 PRT). An optional gas flow system (984-00-00) is available for fixed point operation.
Applications include primary laboratory calibration of radiation thermometers, ITS-90 fixed point realization, and high-accuracy infrared thermometer verification in national metrology institutes and accredited calibration facilities.
