Product Description
The Watlow MI band heater represents a significant advancement in barrel heating technology, utilizing exclusive mineral insulation to achieve higher watt densities, operating temperatures, and thermal efficiencies than conventional mica or ceramic insulated heaters. With performance reaching 1400°F (760°C) and watt densities up to 230 W/in², the MI series meets the demanding requirements of modern plastics processing equipment.
The key to its performance is the thin layer of high-thermal-conductivity MI material separating the element wire from the inside diameter sheath, combined with a thicker, lower-thermal-conductivity backing layer. This construction directs heat inward toward the barrel while maintaining lower internal wire temperatures, significantly extending heater life.
Unlike conventional band heaters, the MI series is formed before attaching leads or terminals, ensuring exceptional roundness and tight fit to the barrel. This results in uniform heat distribution with minimal hot spots. Stainless steel clamping bars extend the full width of the heater, providing clamping uniformity around the entire circumference.
The stainless steel sheath and side fold design resist contamination from plastic drool, while the rugged construction withstands shock and vibration. Numerous clamping and termination styles are available to suit specific machine requirements.
Typical applications include:
- Extruder barrels
- Blown film dies
- Injection molding machines
- Other cylinder heating applications requiring high temperatures and watt densities
